Jamaican Wakes – A Cultural Tradition

Freedom Arts / The Colour of Love in collaboration with Cultural Vibrations and Chef’s Hut invite you to their free family friendly event. Join them for a film showing, exhibition viewing and exploration of Jamaican traditions… and how they have merged with UK ways, in particular the wake, also referred to as “nine night”. How has this specific Jamaican tradition around the passing of a loved one merged with the UK way of remembering our dearly departed family members or friends?

The Colour of Love are interested in hearing your experiences and hearing your opinions on keeping the Nine Night tradition alive and authentic here in Nottingham.

This event also coincides with the run of Natasha Gordon’s remarkable award-winning debut play Nine Night which was originally commissioned by and played at the National Theatre ahead of a successful West End run.

Refreshments will be available during this event and Jamaican food provided by Chef’s Hut.

Event timings:

4pm – 4.30 pm Meet & Greet
4.30 – 5.10pm Film Screening with a short Q&A
5.30 -7.00pm Exhibition viewing and refreshments from Chefs Hut Jamaican takeaway

The Colour of Love

The Colour of Love is an organisation dedicated to preserving the stories of mixed-race relationships in Nottingham.

This project celebrates the strength and resilience of these couples, and above all the love they shared which blazed a trail for the future. The Colour of Love aims to empower the local community and descendants of these pioneers to learn more about this previously unexplored history, and to create an invaluable archive for future generations. By recording & documenting the hidden and untold until now stories of these couples we are leaving a legacy for future generations of theirs and Nottinghamshire’s diverse history.
